Wholesale price inflation increased marginally to 2.38% in February, government data released on Monday (March 17) showed. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation was 2.31% in January.

It was 0.2% in February 2024.

The data stated that inflation in manufactured food products rose to 11.06%, vegetable oil by 33.59%, and beverages increased marginally to 1.66% during the month.
Prices of vegetables reduced with potato prices dropping to 27.54% from 74.28% during the month.

On March 12, retail inflation data showed that Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation eased to a seven-month low of 3.61% in February.

The Wholesale Price Index or WPI measures the change in prices of goods wholesale businesses sell to and trade in bulk with other companies. Unlike the CPI which tracks prices of goods and services purchased by consumers, WPI tracks factory gate prices before retail prices.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry releases WPI. Under the index, commodities are categorised into three groups — primary articles (which are further divided into food and non-food articles), fuel and power and manufactured products, and the base year for the index is 2011-12.
