Ahead of World Sleep Day, a study conducted by YouGov and Amazon Alexa reveals that 53% of respondents face sleep-related issues when they do not follow a consistent bedtime routine. The survey, conducted across ten Indian cities, explores the sleep habits of Indian households, showing that 54% of respondents reported improved sleep quality after adopting a regular bedtime routine.

The survey found that 52% of respondents maintain consistent bedtime habits, with 86% beginning their routines after 8 PM. Of these, 53% start their routine after 10:30 PM.

Households with couples were the most likely to engage in these activities.

Voice assistants are playing a growing role in sleep routines, with 52% of respondents using them to manage bedtime habits. Individuals aged 35-45 were more likely to use voice assistants than those aged 25-34. Among households, those with couples and children were the most frequent users of voice assistants for sleep routines.

The study also indicates increasing interest in wellness activities such as meditation, journaling, and light exercises as part of bedtime routines. While only 27% currently engage in such activities, over 50% expressed interest in adopting them in the future. Couples, both with and without children, showed higher interest in incorporating these practices.

Eating and snacking before bedtime is another habit gaining traction, with 21% currently engaging in it and 34% expressing interest in adding relaxing beverages or snacks to their routines. Other activities respondents wish to include are avoiding phones by playing brain games, solving puzzles, reading, and unwinding with music or news updates. About 11% of respondents preferred not to follow any bedtime routine.

Teena Sidana, Country Manager at Alexa India, stated that voice assistants are becoming a practical tool for managing bedtime routines. Features like playing meditation sessions, relaxing sounds, audiobooks, or music, setting alarms, and controlling smart home devices are helping users create personalized sleep environments.

The survey was conducted online in February 2025 with over 1,000 respondents across cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata.
