Trump has expressed cautious optimism about ending the three-year war but has also hinted at discussions on “dividing certain assets.” The question remains: will Ukraine and its allies accept any compromises that weaken its sovereignty?
Despite the push for negotiations, Russia has made no indications of offering concessions. Former diplomat Alexander Khara remains sceptical, stating, “So far, we haven’t heard of any Russian concessions to Ukraine, nor to the United States.” Russia continues to demand Ukraine’s demilitarisation, territorial recognition of occupied areas and limits on its ability to mobilise — demands that Kyiv deems unacceptable.
Putin’s demands, which include Ukraine’s surrender and restrictions on European intervention, have been outright rejected by Ukrainian officials. Khara asserted that these terms amount to Ukraine’s “subjugation,” leaving it defenceless against further aggression.
Former Indian diplomat Ashok Sajjanhar echoed this sentiment, warning that acceding to these terms would mean “capitulation” for Ukraine.
A key concern is whether Trump’s desire to broker a historic peace deal could lead to undue compromises. Accepting Putin’s terms could embolden further Russian aggression and set a dangerous precedent. As Sajjanhar cautioned, Ukraine is seeking “a fair, just, and durable peace,” not a forced settlement that leaves it vulnerable.
Trump is advocating for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine has already agreed to unconditionally. However, Russia has yet to respond, instead pushing for its own terms. While Trump wants to end the war and secure his legacy, the challenge lies in ensuring that any ceasefire leads to a lasting and fair peace rather than a temporary pause in hostilities.
Ukraine has made a significant concession by agreeing to the ceasefire without demanding immediate security guarantees. However, Khara insists that long-term peace must include NATO membership and European troop deployments to deter future Russian aggression.
As the world awaits the outcome of Trump and Putin’s discussions, the key question is whether these negotiations will pave the way for a sustainable resolution or simply serve as a stopgap before further conflict. With neither side willing to concede on key issues, the road to peace remains uncertain.
